BLURB

Everyone in Devil’s Lake knows the three golden Malloy sisters—but one of them is keeping a secret that will turn their little world inside out….

No one knows exactly what happened to Kit in the woods that night—all they have are a constellation of facts: icy blue lips and fingers cold to the touch, a lacy bra, an abandoned pick-up truck with keys still in the ignition. Still, Tessa, even in her fog of grief, is certain that her sister’s killer wasn’t Boyd, the boy next door whom they’ve all loved in their own way. There are too many details that don’t add up, too many secrets still tucked away.

But no matter how fiercely she searches for answers, at the core of that complicated night is a truth that’s heartbreakingly simple.

Told in lush, haunting prose, Frozen Beauty is a story of the intoxicating power of first love, the deep bonds of sisterhood, and a shocking death that will forever change the living.

REVIEW

Frozen Beauty is a classic whodunit thriller. What seemed an open-and-shut case, turned out to be an emotional mystery. We meet three sisters, their relationships among themselves and with those around them. With alternate past and present we get to gauge what led to Katherine or Kit’s death, through Lilly’s past diary entries and Tessa’s attempt at investigation.

I found the setting of the story quite intriguing. The weather of Devil’s Lake town seems to resonate with the gloominess of Kit’s death.

I enjoyed exploring Tessa and Lilly. They are different and similar at the same time. Lilly wants to feel included, feel needed, which hit my nerve. Tessa seems to feel so connected to her older sister who is not her twin but they have that connection beyond being normal twins and that was interesting.

What I felt was missing was I didn’t get to see Lilly in the present, i.e. after Kit’s death. I thought she’d show some curiosity this time too. I also wanted to know how she coped with her oldest sister’s death.

I didn’t quite understand what the chimerism connection here was. That could have been explained properly since not all readers are adept in science.

I like prosaic poetry but I was not so satisfied with Kit’s poems.

The climax could have been more interesting. The entire story was so full of secrets and mysteries and unknown but the ultimate secret seemed faded in front of the overall suspense factor. To be honest, I expected more goriness.

My Rating: 3.8/5 🌟
